چکیده

The role of optical buffering in the development of all-optical cross-connects is discussed, followed by an analysis of fibre delay line implementations in optical buffers. It is shown that the traffic model plays an important part in the analyses of the systems, together with the traffic load, the use of internal buffer wavelengths, and the cross-connect architecture. Travelling buffers have superior signal quality, but recirculating buffers require less fibre which is an important limiting factor for the realisation of an all-optical cross-connect. For both travelling and recirculating buffers, the fibre delay line distribution plays a pronounced role in the performance of the buffer.

On All-optical Buffering in Optical Packet Switched Cross Connects

Department of Electrical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology, P.O. Box 513, 5600 MB Eindhoven, The Netherlands Abstract  It is widely recognized that all-optical packet switched telecommunication nodes require a form of all-optical buffering and synchronization to avoid congestion in the switching matrix . We present a novel all-optical switching concept suitable for these purposes...

Multi-wavelength switching in IP optical nodes adopting different buffering strategies

The paper addresses the topic of long-haul optical networking for the provision of large-bandwidth IP services. A class of optical packet switching architectures is considered which adopts an arrayed wavelength grating device as packet router. The architecture performs slotted packet switching operations and fully exploits the wavelength routing capabilities by allowing multi-wavelength switchi...

A comparison of optical buffering technologies

We describe the practical and fundamental limitations of the more prominent optical buffering approaches. The architectural implementation and needs of an optical packet switch are used as a foundation for the study. We also present initial results for a buffered, all-optical, 40 Gb/s packet switch. c © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Electrical Ingress Buffering and Traffic Aggregation for Optical Packet Switching and Their Effect on TCP-Level Performance in Optical Mesh Networks

The wide deployment of wavelength-division multiplexing technology and new transmission techniques have resulted in significant increases in the transmission capacity in optical fibers, both in the number of wavelengths and the bandwidth of each wavelength channel. Meanwhile, the fast growth of the Internet demands more data switching capacity in the network in order to deliver high bandwidth t...

Fractional Lambda SwitchingTM

Fractional Lambda (λ) Switching (FλSTM) adds the necessary efficiency to Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) while preserving the simplicity of whole λ switching. Due to its provisioning capability, from a fraction of STS-1 to a full optical channel capacity, FλSTM will extend the reach of optical networking all the way to the network edges in the metro and enterprise. Finally, FλSTM uniquel...

Survey and Comparison of Optical Switch Fabrication Techniques and Architectures

The main issue in the optical transmission is switching speed. The optical packet switching faces many significant challenges in processing and buffering. The generalized multilevel protocol switching seeks to eliminate the asynchronous transfer mode and synchronous optical network layer, hence the implementation of IP over WDM (wave length division multiplexing). Optical burst switching attemp...
